Celebrating the Nature, Culture and Wonder of Canada’s Northern Sky

The Legendary Sky Exhibit was designed by the Astronomy North Society in partnership with the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, the Canadian Space Agency and project sponsors including DeBeers Canada, First Air and Coast Fraser Tower Suite Hotel.

This unique exhibit first opened at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in 2010 to raise awareness of the Legendary Sky Project and to foster a new discussion about the Nature, Culture and Wonder of Canada’s Northern Sky.

The original 12-month exhibit featured touch screen computers and informative Nature, Culture and Wonder display panels, along with some dazzling feature attractions:

  • ExhibitTLSThe Legendary Sky Diamond • The Wonder Section of the exhibit featured a rough diamond from the Northwest Territories that traveled aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour with Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Julie Payette to raise awareness of the exhibit, the geology of the solar system and the formation of diamonds in space;
  • The AuroraMAX Simulator • The Nature Section of the exhibit included a one-of-a-kind aurora borealis simulator features amazing touch-less screen technology that invited skywatchers of all ages to create their own auroras and learn about the cause-and-effect relationship between the Sun and the Earth;
  • Traditional Knowledge of the Northern Sky • The centrepiece of the Culture Section was a tribute to Northern Sky Knowledge and Heritage that included examples of regional stories, terminology and symbols from across the Northwest Territories.

Exhibit Inquiries

Today, the exhibit panels and touch screen computers are available for community organizations that wish to collect and preserve Northern Sky Knowledge and Heritage for use in community classrooms. The exhibit components, along with Astronomy North volunteers, are available to support local education and outreach initiatives that align with culture and/or language based curriculum in the Northwest Territories and will result in community-specific learning modules that will connect youth to the sky they see above their communities.

The exhibit is available on loan at no cost, however we ask that the host community cover the cost of shipping. To reserve The Legendary Sky Exhibit panels and touch screen computers, please send your request to info@astronomynorth.com today!
